When you’re choosing a swimming pool, there are plenty of things you’re probably thinking about.
The shape.
The size.
The color.
The features.
The price.
But here’s one question that probably isn’t nearly as exciting:
“What am I going to have to do to this pool 10 or 15 years from now?”
And it’s actually a REALLY important question.
Because depending on the type of pool you choose, one of the largest future maintenance expenses could be resurfacing the entire interior of your swimming pool.
With fiberglass?
Routine resurfacing isn’t part of normal pool ownership.
And when you’re investing in something you plan to enjoy for decades, that’s a BIG deal.

Why Don’t Fiberglass Pools Need Routine Resurfacing?
Like so many of the fiberglass benefits we’ve been talking about, this advantage starts with the pool itself.
A fiberglass pool is manufactured as a complete shell with a durable, factory-applied surface.
That is fundamentally different from a concrete or gunite pool.
Concrete and gunite pools are constructed onsite and require an interior finish over the concrete structure. Depending on the pool, that might be plaster, quartz, pebble or another finish.
That interior finish does not last forever.
It wears.
And eventually, it has to be redone.
Fiberglass doesn’t rely on a cement-based interior finish that needs to be routinely replastered.
Latham puts it pretty simply: its fiberglass pools are manufactured with innovative materials designed for long-term durability and do not require costly resurfacing.
That’s not an equipment upgrade.
It’s not an optional feature.
It’s an advantage built right into the pool.
How Often Do Gunite Pools Need to Be Resurfaced?
This is where the long-term difference becomes pretty significant.
The exact lifespan of a gunite or concrete pool’s interior finish depends on the material, water chemistry, use and other conditions.
But standard plaster commonly lasts around 7 to 15 years before resurfacing becomes necessary. Premium quartz, pebble and other aggregate finishes can last longer, sometimes 15 to 20 years or more.
Think about that over the life of your pool.
If you own that pool for 30 years, resurfacing may not necessarily be a one-time expense.
Depending on the finish and how long you own the home, it could potentially happen more than once.
That’s something homeowners should understand when comparing the long-term ownership demands of different pool types.
And Resurfacing Isn’t Cheap
This isn’t like replacing a filter cartridge or buying another bucket of pool chemicals.
Pool resurfacing is a major project.
Current 2026 national estimates put swimming pool resurfacing at roughly $6,000 to $15,000, with the actual cost depending heavily on the size of the pool and the finish selected. Concrete/gunite resurfacing costs vary considerably because homeowners can choose everything from traditional plaster to aggregate or premium tile finishes.
And here in Texas, the numbers are very similar.
For example, current Austin-area estimates put pool resurfacing at approximately $5,886 to $14,715, with an average around $10,791.
Those are today’s numbers.
Now imagine owning that pool for decades.
That’s why the initial price of a swimming pool doesn’t tell you the whole story.

What Actually Happens When a Gunite Pool Is Resurfaced?
Resurfacing isn’t simply rolling on a new coat of paint.
The pool generally has to be drained.
The existing surface has to be prepared or removed.
Any necessary repairs need to be addressed.
The new interior finish is applied.
Then the pool has to be refilled and the water chemistry reestablished.
The exact process depends on the existing finish and the new surface being installed, but this is a real renovation project, not routine weekend maintenance.
And during that process?
You’re obviously not swimming.
With fiberglass, routine resurfacing simply isn’t part of the ownership cycle.
One Less BIG Future Pool Expense
This is exactly what we mean when we talk about the long-term cost of pool ownership.
The amount you pay to install your swimming pool is only one part of what that pool will cost you.
What happens during the next:
10 years.
20 years.
30 years.
…matters too.
If one pool surface may require a major renovation every decade or so, while another is designed to provide decades of enjoyment without routine resurfacing, that’s something worth considering BEFORE you decide which pool to put in your backyard.
We talked about this bigger picture in Do Fiberglass Pools Cost Less to Own? Understanding the Long-Term Value.
Because we think homeowners should ask two questions:
“What does this pool cost to BUY?”
And…
“What will this pool cost me to OWN?”
They’re not necessarily the same thing.
That Fiberglass Surface Does A LOT More Than Last
Here’s what makes this even better.
Avoiding routine resurfacing isn’t the only advantage you get from the fiberglass surface.
That same surface is:
💦 Smooth and comfortable
🦠 Nonporous and less inviting to algae
🧹 Easier to clean
🧪 Designed for easier water care and less chemical intervention
🐾 Comfortable for feet AND paws
💪 Durable and designed for long-term use
One characteristic of the pool contributes to multiple ownership advantages.
That’s one of the things we love about fiberglass.
It isn’t about adding a bunch of features to compensate for the pool.
The pool itself is giving you the advantages.
Easier Maintenance Starts With the Surface
A smooth, nonporous surface doesn’t give algae the same rough, porous environment in which to establish itself.
That can mean less brushing, less scrubbing and easier everyday pool care.
We’ve covered that advantage in Are Fiberglass Pools Easier to Maintain?.
And because easier maintenance and easier water care often go hand in hand, we’ve also taken a deeper look at why fiberglass pools can require less chemical intervention.
Again…
It’s all connected.
The material you choose for your swimming pool affects a LOT more than what the pool looks like on installation day.

Quality Matters
Of course, we’re not saying every fiberglass pool is identical.
They’re not.
The quality of the materials, engineering, manufacturing process, surface finish and quality control all matter.
That’s why we’ve talked before about the importance of looking beyond simply asking whether a pool is fiberglass.
You also need to ask:
Who manufactured it?
What materials and manufacturing processes were used?
What warranty stands behind it?
And who is installing it?
A quality fiberglass pool is an investment designed for the long haul.
You can read more about that in How Long Do Fiberglass Pools Last? Why Quality & Installation Matter.
Installation Matters, Too
A great fiberglass shell deserves a great installation.
Proper excavation, preparation, placement, plumbing, backfilling and equipment installation all contribute to the long-term performance of the finished pool.
That’s why the pool manufacturer AND the pool installer matter.
Gary’s Pool & Patio has specialized in fiberglass pools since 1979.
We’ve watched fiberglass pool technology evolve tremendously over those decades.
And we’ve also seen something that hasn’t changed:
How a pool is built and how it’s installed matter years after the construction trucks leave your driveway.
Your Pool Should Get Older. Not Become a Renovation Project.
We LOVE this part.
Your pool is supposed to become the place where life happens.
Kids grow up around it.
Friends gather around it.
Saturday afternoons disappear in it.
Maybe the dog takes over the tanning ledge. 😂🐾
Years pass.
And through all of it, your pool is supposed to be something you ENJOY.
We’d much rather see homeowners spending their money making memories around their pools than planning a major resurfacing project every decade or so.
That’s one of the reasons we’ve specialized in fiberglass since 1979.
A quality fiberglass pool is designed for decades of enjoyment without routine resurfacing becoming part of the ownership cycle.

No Routine Resurfacing. Less Maintenance. MORE POOL. 💦
This is another one of those fiberglass advantages that might not seem particularly exciting when you’re first choosing your pool.
But ask someone who’s writing a five-figure check to resurface their pool…
It gets pretty exciting. 😉
No routine costly resurfacing.
A smooth, nonporous surface.
Easier maintenance.
Less chemical intervention.
Long-term durability.
Lower ownership demands.
And more time enjoying the reason you bought a pool in the first place.
THAT’S the fiberglass difference.
If you’re considering a fiberglass pool in San Antonio or South & Central Texas, we’d love to show you what’s possible.
