Pet-friendly pool.

Sounds great, right?

But what does that actually MEAN?

Is it a pool your dog can swim in? A pool that’s comfortable on their paws? A pool with places where they can easily get in and out? A pool with shallow areas where they can splash, lounge or cool off without having to swim the entire time?

Actually… ALL of the above.

Because around here, when we talk about creating a backyard paradise for the whole family, we mean the WHOLE family. 🐶💙

Pets are family. We know that.

And they should be able to enjoy the pool, too.

The good news? Fiberglass pools have some pretty incredible characteristics AND design options that can make them a fantastic choice for a pet-friendly backyard.

And as always, it starts with the pool itself.

So, What Makes a Pool Pet-Friendly?

There isn’t one single feature that suddenly makes a swimming pool “pet-friendly.”

It’s really a combination of things.

You want a pool surface that’s comfortable for paws. You want durability. You want areas where your pet can comfortably enter and exit. Depending on your dog, you may want shallow areas where they can stand or lounge without swimming.

And you definitely want a pool that’s easy to clean when your favorite swimmer brings a little hair, grass and dirt along for the ride. 😂

Fiberglass checks a LOT of those boxes.

1. A Smooth Surface That’s Easier on Paws

One of the biggest pet-friendly advantages of fiberglass is its smooth, nonporous surface.

Dogs don’t always enter and exit a swimming pool gracefully.

There may be some paddling.

Some scrambling.

Maybe a little excitement. 😂

Their paws can repeatedly come into contact with the sides, steps and floor of the pool.

A smooth fiberglass surface is much more comfortable than a rough, abrasive pool finish.

That’s great for bare human feet.

And it’s pretty great for paws, too. 🐾

2. What About Those Dog Nails?

This is probably one of the first things pet owners wonder about.

Can my dog’s nails damage a fiberglass pool?

Quality fiberglass pools are manufactured with durable surfaces designed for real-life pool use. Normal swimming and contact from your dog’s paws isn’t something that should keep you from letting your four-legged family member enjoy the water.

Keeping your dog’s nails properly trimmed is always a good idea, of course.

But fiberglass pools are made to be USED and ENJOYED.

Around here, that includes the furry swimmers.

3. The RIGHT Pool Design Can Make a HUGE Difference

This is where pet-friendly pool planning gets really fun.

Today’s fiberglass pools aren’t simply big bowls of water with one set of steps at the end.

There are designs available with:

🐾 Tanning ledges
💦 Splash pads and shallow lounging areas
🪑 Built-in benches
🏊 Full-length benches
🐶 Multiple entry and exit points
☀️ Wide steps and shallow areas

And those features can completely change the swimming experience for a dog.

Tanning Ledges & Splash Pads

A tanning ledge or shallow splash area can be PERFECT for a dog that loves water but doesn’t necessarily want to swim nonstop.

They can splash.

Cool off.

Stand in the water.

Hang out with the family.

Or simply enjoy being part of everything without having to paddle the entire time.

And let’s be real…

Your dog may claim the tanning ledge before you do. 😂🐾

Built-In Benches Give Them Places to Rest

Built-in benches can be another fantastic pet-friendly feature.

Some fiberglass pool designs have benches strategically positioned throughout the pool. Others offer full-length benchesthat run along an entire side.

For a dog, those aren’t just seats.

They’re resting points.

A dog swimming around the pool may be able to reach a bench, get their footing, take a break and then decide whether it’s time for another lap or time to get out.

That can make the pool feel much more accessible and enjoyable for a four-legged swimmer.

Multiple Entry AND Exit Points Can Be a Big Safety Advantage

This may be one of the most important design considerations of all.

A dog may enter a pool from just about anywhere.

Getting OUT is another story.

A pool design with multiple steps, benches, ledges or other accessible areas can provide additional opportunities for your pet to find their footing and make their way toward an exit.

Instead of having only one obvious way out at the opposite end of the pool, the right design can provide several places where a dog can rest or transition toward an exit.

That’s something worth thinking about when you’re selecting your fiberglass pool model.

The shape of your pool shouldn’t just fit your backyard. It should fit the family that’s going to use it.

And yes, that includes the dog.

4. Teach Your Fur Baby How to Get OUT

Even with a pet-friendly pool design, this part is incredibly important.

Show your dog where the exits are.

Don’t assume that because your dog can swim, they’ll automatically know how to get out of an unfamiliar swimming pool.

When introducing them to the pool, guide them toward the steps or shallow areas several times so they begin learning where those exit points are.

If your pool has more than one accessible exit, even better.

And always supervise pets around the pool, particularly while they’re learning.

Some dogs are incredible swimmers.

Some aren’t.

Some THINK they’re incredible swimmers. 😂

Either way, knowing how to safely exit the pool is essential.

5. Fiberglass Makes Cleanup Easier, Too

Dog owners already know.

Our fur babies don’t always arrive at the pool freshly bathed and brushed.

They bring…

Hair.

Grass.

Dirt.

And occasionally whatever mysterious thing they found in the backyard five minutes earlier. 😂

Fortunately, the same smooth, nonporous fiberglass surface that makes the pool comfortable for paws also makes the pool easier to clean.

Dirt and contaminants have fewer rough, porous places to become embedded.

Good circulation and filtration help take care of what your four-legged swimmers bring along with them.

You may need to clean skimmer baskets or filtration equipment more frequently if you have a dog who’s in the pool ALL the time, especially a heavy shedder.

But that’s just part of designing your maintenance routine around how your family actually uses the pool.

6. Proper Water Care Matters for Fur Babies, Too

Every swimming pool needs properly balanced water and appropriate sanitation.

And when pets are swimming, good water care remains important.

Keep plenty of fresh drinking water available nearby so your dog isn’t tempted to treat the swimming pool like one enormous water bowl.

After swimming, a quick rinse with fresh water is also a good idea, especially for dogs that spend a lot of time in the pool.

And fiberglass gives you another advantage here.

Its smooth, nonporous surface can make everyday water care easier and reduce the need for aggressive chemical intervention.

We go deeper into that benefit in Do Fiberglass Pools Use Fewer Chemicals?.

7. Don’t Forget the Poolside Experience

Being pet-friendly isn’t only about what happens IN the pool.

Some dogs will become champion swimmers.

Others?

They’ll be perfectly happy supervising from the patio. 😎🐶

Shade, comfortable places to lie down and easy access to fresh water can make the entire backyard more enjoyable for your pet.

And if you’re choosing features such as a pergola, covered patio, umbrellas or other shaded spaces, think about where your fur baby will probably want to hang out, too.

Because sometimes the best seat by the pool…

belongs to the dog.

Not Every Dog Is a Swimmer

Of course, every dog is different.

Never force a reluctant dog into the pool.

Puppies, senior dogs, smaller dogs and dogs with physical limitations may need additional help around water. A properly fitted canine life jacket can also be a great option, particularly for dogs learning to swim or those that aren’t strong swimmers.

And regardless of how well your dog swims, supervision matters.

Pet-friendly design can make a pool more comfortable and accessible for your dog, but it doesn’t replace good pool safety.

Pets Are Family. We Know That. 💙

At Gary’s Pool & Patio, we’re not just thinking about what your pool looks like.

We’re thinking about how your family is going to LIVE in it.

Maybe that means kids doing cannonballs.

Friends gathered around the pool on Saturday afternoon.

Quiet evenings floating under the Texas sky.

And maybe it means a very happy dog stretched out on the tanning ledge like they’re the one who paid for the pool. 😂🐾

Because pets aren’t an afterthought.

They’re family.

And when we’re helping you choose your fiberglass pool, features such as tanning ledges, splash pads, wide steps, built-in benches, full-length benches and multiple entry and exit points can all be part of creating a pool that works beautifully for everyone who calls your house home.
